Linux 菜鸟的困惑： Fedora 还是 Ubuntu?

各位好，我是一个 Linux 菜鸟，以前只在学校的机房用过 Fedora Core 1, 另外就是在 Windows XP 下用过 Cygwin 里面的 XEmacs 写作业。现在我准备在自己的笔记本上完全抛弃 Win XP, 换上 Linux。本来是一门心思准备装 Fedora Core 4, 因为以前毕竟接触过，另外 Fedora 出身 Redhat 也很让人信赖。但是最近听说 Ubuntu 不错，特别是这个论坛上用的人很多， 还异口同声地赞扬 Ubuntu，弄得我也举棋不定了。

我对 Linux Distro 的要求不高：因为是在笔记本上安装(Compaq Presario X1000), 硬件兼容性是头等大事。然后我主要是日常桌面应用，因此各种应用程序最好多一点，界面好看一点但是不要太消耗资源（我是老机子了，P-M 1.4/512 DDR 266)。

希望坛里的各位 Linux 老鸟能帮小弟出个主意。

PS 不知道 Linux 上有没有类似金山词霸的英文词典，小弟经常用。另外 Linux 能读取U盘 NTFS 分区的文件吗？因为我准备把我的文档的东东都通过U盘转移到 Linux 里。

Update: 刚看见 distrowatch.com 上的 Linux 发行版排名，Ubuntu 果真傲视群雄，但是 Fedora 又是出身名门，真是让人左右为难啊。

Help needed!

I just installed Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy" Preview Release. (I haven't figured out how to install Chinese input method, so I am typing Engligh here. Sorry about that.) The biggest problem right now is that the Ubuntu system is slower compared to XP on my very same laptop. During the setup I used the guided (automatic) partitioning and the swap partition was set to 1.5GiB (My RAM is only 512MB) by default, and I didn't change it.  Then I found out the swap should only be 1-2 times in size of the RAM. So is the slow responsiveness because my swap was set too large? If it is the case, how can I change the size of /swap without totally reinstalling the Ubuntu?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
